Unit G Summary #5: Graph and Asymptote

5. Describe the conditions in which a graph can cross through an asymptote.
There are three types of asymptotes: horizontal asymptote, slant asymptote, and vertical asymptote. The vertical asymptote line is different from the others the most because the graph can NEVER EVER cross the through a vertical asymptote. To find a vertical asymptote, I will factor the equation and cancel any common factors, then I set the denominator equal to 0 and solve. The vertical asymtote has x=___ equation. Unlike vertical asymptote, horizontal and slant asymptotes allow the graph can sometimes cross but only in the middle of the graph. I will know if the graph has a slant or a horizontal asymtote by comparing the degree on top and bottom of the equation. In these two asymptotes, the equation will have y=___ for horizontal asymptote and y= mx+b (which is the standard form) for slant asymptote.
