Student Problem 8: Unit R Concept 1

The Sum Formulas:

The Difference Formulas:

1. What is this about?
These pictures show two ways of finding the exact values of the sine, cosine, and tangent of the angle 285 degrees. This is from Unit R Concept 1 which is about finding the exact values of angles that aren't on the Unit Circle. We will use the angles on the unit circle that can ADD (sum) or SUBTRACT (difference) to that angle. Although there are many options for this type of problem, the answers of the trigonometry functions of that angle must be the same. Using the Sum and Difference Formulas, we can plug in the numbers to find the answers.
2. What does the reader need to pay attention to?
The readers need to be careful when they are solving the tangent of the 285 degree angle from a Difference formula. That part has fraction within fraction within fraction. First, solving the top and the bottom by using common denominators, the denominator of the fraction on the numerator will cancel out with the denominator of the fraction on the denominator. It will make the fraction easier to solve. Also, to make sure that the readers get the correct answers; they can always check them with a calculator by plugging the trig. functions and the angle.
